What is it?
This cancer begins in the Vulvar.
Parts of the vulva are;
- The clitoris
- Opening of vagina
- Inner and outer lips
- Nearby glands
When either of these cells is abnormal, vulva cancer is suspected.
Symptoms
Symptoms depend on what type of vulvar cancer it is.
Common Symptoms include
- Pain
- Burning or Itching
- Open sore that lasts longer than normal
- Bleeding or discharge
- Thickened vulva skin
- Lump or bump
- Area around vulva looks abnormal
Diagnosis
A pelvic exam is done to determine a healthy reproductive organ. If the doctor finds anything abnormal, a biopsy test is required. A small sample of tissue is removed to look for cancer cells.
If vulvar cancer is diagnosed the next step is to seek care from a gynecological oncologist. These doctors have specialized training in the treatment of gynecological cancer.
Treatment
The stage of cancer determines the treatment. Additional tests may be required to assess the spread of cancer. This is done to determine the right cause of treatment.
