what is ovarian cancer?
Ovarian cancer ranks fifth in cancer deaths among women.
It begins in the ovaries and can also begin in the fallopian tubes. The ovaries produce eggs for reproduction.
Ovaries are also the source of female hormones estrogen and progesterone.
Ovaries are made up of three types of cells which can develop into a cancer.
- Epithelial starts from the cells that cover the outer surface of the ovary.
- Stromal tumors start from the tissue that holds the ovary together.
- Germ cell starts from the cells that produce the eggs.
Fallopian tube cancer
It starts in the tubes that carry the egg from the ovary to the uterus.
Symptoms
- Frequent peeing and not having bowel movements
- Pelvic or abdominal pain
- Bloating or swelling in the abdomen
- Feeling full quickly
- Heavy or irregular bleeding
- Pain during sex
- Back pain
- Fatigue
- Weight loss
Diagnosis
A pelvic exam is done to determine. If symptoms are observed, more tests are required.
If cervical cancer is diagnosed, treatment is determined by the stage of the cancer. A gynecological oncologist determines the best cause for treatment.
Treatment
Treatment is dependent on the type of ovarian cancer and the stage. Other types of treatments may be required.
- Surgery
- Chemotherapy
- Hormone therapy
